Elvin Ramirez

Elvin Ramirez Velez passed away peacefully at home in Valatie, NY at the age of 82 on June 30, 2026 surrounded by loved ones. Elvin was born in Lajas, Puerto Rico on April 22nd, 1944 to Gladys Velez and Jose Ramon Ramirez. Elvin was the second oldest of seven siblings Ramonita Ramirez, Juana Ramirez, Jose Ramon Ramirez Jr, Edgardo Rivera, Awillda Rivera, Jose Manuel Ramirez, and Myrna Ramirez. As a young man in Puerto Rico he was passionate about baseball and grew up an avid Mets fan and was a Triple A baseball player. Elvin will be remembered for his paternal and giving spirit as he helped raise his younger siblings and several nieces and nephews who knew him as Papa. A name he continued to be fondly known as by his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Elvin married his childhood sweetheart Haydee Perez in 1965 and welcomed their daughter Marisol Ramirez on June 24th, 1969. It is at this time that Elvin found his two greatest passions in life, being the best father possible and living a life walking in faith. Elvin moved to Hudson, NY in the summer of 1987 to be closer to family and discovered that there was no Spanish church in Hudson. As Elvin and Haydee started to commute on weekends to the nearest church that was over two hours away, they started to connect with other members of the Spanish speaking community. Elvin began to work with the Pentecostal Church of God International Movement, founding a chapter in Hudson, NY in 1994. As the church grew in membership, he continued to spread the gospel by visiting nursing homes and bringing church services to Spanish speaking seniors in the area. Elvin continued his work with the church in Hudson until the early 2000s when he retired and moved back to Puerto Rico. Papa always enjoyed having his grandchildren Letycia “Letty” and Carlson “Tilito” over for the summers in Lajas where he would treat them every morning with fresh bread from town and many visits to the Parguera. Elvin and Haydee moved back to Hudson in fall of 2021 where they enjoyed being close to their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Elvin and Haydee celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in January 2026. Elvin bravely lived and enjoyed life while battling Alzheimer's for many years. Elvin is predeceased by his siblings Ramonita Ramirez, Jose Ramon Ramirez Jr, Edgardo Rivera, Myrna Ramirez and survived by his wife Haydee Perez, his siblings Juana Ramirez, Jose Manuel Ramirez, and Awillda Rivera, his daughter Marisol Ramirez, his grandchildren Letycia Wolfe (Oliver Wolfe) and Carlson Tilllman Jr. (Nyla Dallas) and great grandchildren Jaxson and Amina Tillman and Theodore Wolfe. Calling hours and funeral services will be Monday July 6, 2026 from 10:00-12:00 at the Sacco Funeral Home 700 Town Hall Drive Hudson. Funeral services will begin at 12:00 noon at the funeral home with Pastor Danny Campos officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at Cedar Park Cemetery Hudson. Elvin nació en Lajas, Puerto Rico, el 22 de abril de 1944, hijo de Gladys Vélez y José Ramón Ramírez. Fue el segundo de siete hermanos: Ramonita Ramírez, Juana Ramírez, José Ramón Ramírez Jr., Edgardo Rivera, Awillda Rivera, José Manuel Ramírez y Myrna Ramírez. En su juventud en Puerto Rico, le apasionaba el béisbol; creció siendo un ferviente seguidor de los Mets y llegó a jugar béisbol a nivel de Triple A. Se le recordará por su espíritu paternal y generoso, ya que ayudó a criar a sus hermanos menores y a varios sobrinos, quienes lo llamaban cariñosamente "Papá", nombre con el que también lo conocían sus nietos y bisnietos. Elvin se casó con su amor de la infancia, Haydee Pérez, en 1965, y el 24 de junio de 1969 nació su hija, Marisol Ramírez. Fue entonces cuando Elvin descubrió sus dos grandes pasiones en la vida: ser el mejor padre posible y vivir una vida de fe. Elvin se mudó a Hudson, Nueva York, en el verano de 1987 para estar más cerca de su familia y descubrió que no había ninguna iglesia de habla hispana en la localidad. Mientras él y Haydee viajaban los fines de semana a la iglesia más cercana —situada a más de dos horas de distancia—, comenzaron a conectar con otros miembros de la comunidad hispanohablante. Elvin empezó a colaborar con el Movimiento Internacional de la Iglesia de Dios Pentecostal, fundando una congregación en Hudson, Nueva York, en 1994. A medida que la iglesia crecía, él continuó difundiendo el evangelio visitando hogares de ancianos y llevando servicios religiosos a los adultos mayores de habla hispana de la zona. Elvin siguió trabajando con la iglesia en Hudson hasta principios de la década de 2000, momento en que se jubiló y regresó a Puerto Rico.
