William P. Meier Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

William P. Meier, 87, of Greenport and formerly of Staatsburg, New York and Hernando, Florida, died at his home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday April 16, 2013. Born on June 15, 1925 in Peekskill New York, Bill was the son of Adolph W. Meier Sr. and Margaret M. (Bissert) Meier. Bill was a member of the Church of St. Joseph at Stuyvesant, New York. Bill graduated high school in Peekskill New York. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served as a radio operator in the Pacific during WWII. Bill was discharged with honors in 1947. He graduated from SUNY Cobleskill in 1948 with a degree in animal husbandry. Bill Married Leona Van Vorst, of Schenectady, New York on June 5th, 1948. They were married for 55 years when she died in 2004. Bill worked as a machinist for General Electric in Schenectady New York and then worked for IBM Poughkeepsie and Kingston NY as a Production Supervisor for 25 years up until his retirement in 1987. He is survived by his brother Stephen of Peekskill NY; sisters Elizabeth Franklin of Rhinebeck NY, Katherine LeFerve of Red Hook NY, and Madeline Meier of Peekskill NY. He was predeceased by his brothers Adolf Meier Jr. and Charles. He is survived by his son Thomas P. and his wife Debbie Meier of Staatsburg NY; three daughters, Donna M. Meier of Hudson NY, Linda M. and her husband Michael Fritz of Red Hook NY and Cynthia A. and her husband Douglas Salamone of Medfield, MA; four grandchildren, Derek W. Fritz of Avon CT, Caetlyn L. Fritz of Red Hook, NY, Kimberly Meier of Cranford NJ, and Kristopher Meier and his wife Melissa of Buffalo NY; and a great grandchild, Aiden James Meier born in November of 2012 of Buffalo NY. Bill was a wonderful Father and provider. His grandchildren will always remember the walks he took them with them when they were young. He will also be remembered with his beloved dog Frosty. Bill was formerly a member of the VFW in Red Hook NY and enjoyed running bingo for them for several years. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, gardening and traveling. He was an excellent carpenter. A memorial service will be offered as a date to be determined.
