Carol Ann Armstrong

HUDSON ~ Carol Ann Armstrong, 80, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2026, at Columbia Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness. Carol Ann was born Aug. 1, 1945 to Howard and Verna Montague of Philmont. Howard was serving in the Navy in the Pacific Theatre when Carol was born. He often told the story of how he was reading the letter from his mother informing him that he had a daughter, when flares and guns were fired from all the surrounding ships. He learned that World War II was over at the same time he learned of Carol’s birth. She graduated from Ockawamick Central School and attended SUNY Oneonta studying home economics. It was at that time that she met the love of her life. A young man, Jack Armstrong, caught her eye at Palen’s Soda Shoppe in Philmont. Jack surprised Carol with an engagement ring on Christmas Eve. Carol and Jack were married at Sacred Heart Church, Philmont, on Aug. 17, 1963. They enjoyed a loving marriage of 62 years. Together they raised two sons, Timothy and Michael. The family moved from Philmont to Elizaville. Carol was a wonderful cook, but was renowned for her baking skills. Whenever there was a large family gathering, it was Carol who was asked to bring the desserts, which were not only delicious but decorated with a seasonal flair. Carol made her own beautiful, multi-layered wedding cake and continued that tradition making cakes for her sons’ and siblings weddings as well. She was also a gifted seamstress. She made her wedding gown as well as other gowns for brides in the family. She also made special occasion outfits such as Christening gowns, flower girl dresses and more. Anyone who wore a Carol Armstrong original was fortunate to have such a keepsake. Not content to only make fashion for humans, Carol also made custom Barbie and American Girl doll clothes. She even made a custom tuxedo for her grandpuppy to wear to her son Michael’s wedding. Carol worked at Lorbrook in Hudson until it closed. She then worked as a temp at area medical offices before becoming a senior buyer in the Ulster County Purchasing Department. She was active in her community. Carol was one of the first women inducted in to the Philmont Rotary Club, which was made more special by the fact that her father, Howard, was the Rotarian to swear her in. Carol went on to serve as president of the club and she and Jack organized the club’s annual golf tournament each year. Carol was also active in her church. She was a Communicant of Holy Trinity Church, Hudson, and over the years had served as a Eucharistic minister and lector. After their retirements, Carol and Jack enjoyed traveling the country visiting family and spending many winters in Myrtle Beach. They were avid Virginia Tech fans (Go Hokies!) and traveled to Virginia whenever possible to attend football and basketball games. She is survived by her loving husband, Jack, who has devoted his life to making Carol happy. She is also survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Sherrie Armstrong of Longs, S.C., and Michael and Alison Armstrong of Christiansburg, Va., three granddaughters, Keating Bartlett, Kendal-Anne Neal, and Alexandra Armstrong, three great-granddaughters, her brothers, Bill Montague, Richard Montague, Howard Montague, her sisters, Linda Traphagen, Paula Currie and Phyllis Montague Harris as well as several nieces, nephews. Calling hours will be Thursday January 29, 2026 from 3-6 PM at the Sacco Funeral Home 700 Town Hall Drive Hudson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00AM on Friday January 30, 2026 at Holy Trinity Parish 429 E. Allen St. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery Philmont when confirmed.
